Article Directory - Bring Your Smile Back To Life With Dental Veneers

Have you ever wanted to improve the appearance of your smile? Over the years dentistry has significantly changed and it is now possible to rejuvenate your smile without extensive preparation of your teeth, in many cases. Porcelain veneers are a popular option for patients who have cosmetic problems with their teeth. By using veneers, your dentist can help improve the appearance of your teeth to provide a clean, bright, healthy looking smile.

Porcelain veneers can be an effective solution for a variety of cosmetic dental problems, including:

* Cracked teeth
* Pitted or chipped teeth
* Stained teeth
* Slightly crooked teeth
* Unevenly sized teeth
* Gaps between teeth

Understanding the Procedure

Getting a dental veneer can take up to three trips to your dentist - consultation, and application. One tooth, or many teeth can simultaneously undergo the veneer process. The first step in receiving your dental veneers is diagnosis and treatment planning, which requires your active participation. During this appointment, your dentist will examine your teeth to make sure dental veneers are appropriate fro you and discuss what the procedure will involve and some of its limitations. Your dentist may also take x-rays, as well as impressions of your mouth and teeth.

To prepare your tooth for a veneer, your dentist will remove approximately ½ millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface to make up for the added thickness of the veneer to be added to the tooth surface. Next, your dentist will make a model or impression of your tooth. This model will be sent to a dental laboratory, which will create your veneer. The fabrication process will typically take anywhere from one to two weeks before your dentist will receive the veneers back from the laboratory.

Before your veneer can be permanently placed to your teeth, your dentist will temporarily place it on your tooth to examine the fit and color. The veneer will be repeatedly removed and trimmed as needed to achieve the proper fit. The color of your veneer can be adjusted with the shade of the cement used for placement. To prepare your tooth for the placement of your veneer, your dentist will clean, polish and etch it. Special cement is applied to the veneer and the veneer is then placed on your tooth. Once properly positioned on your tooth, your dentist will apply a special light beam to the dental veneer, which activates chemicals in the cement, causing it to harden or cure very quickly.

Once the procedure is complete, your dentist may ask you to return for a follow-up visit in a couple of weeks to check how your gums are responding to the presence of your veneer and to once again examine the veneer's placement.
